First and foremost thank you.   Eight years ago on the day I graduated from college, Massachusetts became the first state to recognize that two consenting adults should be able to get married regardless of their gender or sexual orientation.  The recognition of civil rights and marriage equality has slowly spread across parts of this great nation of ours.  It has not been without battles and certainly not without losses.  Only yesterday were equality and civil rights handed a brutal beating at the hands of the voters of North Carolina.  A crushing blow to be sure.

Or so we thought.  FORWARD is the campaign slogan for your re-election in 2012.  I think today perhaps more than any day during your presidency, you have in fact moved us forward by giving your opinion and speaking out against injustice.  And I quote you directly: “it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married.”

Mr President – it’s nice to know that your heart believes in equality.  I only ask that you act on what you speak and practice what you preach.  I know that’s asking a lot, but if not – why speak up at all?  I think I stand for all members of the LGBT community and the friends and family who support them when I say thank you for speaking up and speaking out.
